Evaluations & Support Across the Lifespan

We offer comprehensive neurodevelopmental evaluations and behavioral support services for autistic individuals and those with intellectual disability, ADHD, learning differences, and related conditions, from age 2 through adulthood. Every service is grounded in the best available evidence and delivered with a positive, strengths-based, neurodiversity-affirming approach.

Our most common and most essential referrals are for Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disability evaluations, which open doors to New Mexico’s autism services and developmental disability waiver. Scroll down to learn about each service.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Evaluation

Getting an ASD evaluation is about getting to know a person more fully — their unique qualities, how they experience the world, and what support will help them thrive. We use gold-standard diagnostic tools including the ADOS-2 and ADI-R alongside cognitive, adaptive, and behavioral measures. In New Mexico, an ASD diagnosis is also the key that unlocks autism services and the developmental disability waiver, opening doors to speech therapy, occupational therapy, behavioral support, and more.

  • Comprehensive evaluation using ADOS-2, ADI-R, and cognitive/adaptive measures
  • Serves toddlers (age 2+), school-age children, adolescents, and adults
  • Specialized experience with co-occurring intellectual disability and complex support needs
  • Detailed written report with individualized recommendations
  • Feedback session to review findings in plain language and map next steps
  • Documentation accepted for NM autism services, DD waiver, school IEP teams, and insurance

Intellectual Disability Assessment

An intellectual disability diagnosis is the key to New Mexico’s developmental disability waiver — which funds critical long-term supports including residential services, day programs, supported employment, and more. We provide thorough assessments of intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior, including individuals with significant support needs, limited verbal communication, or co-occurring autism.

  • Assessment of intellectual functioning (IQ) and adaptive behavior
  • Flexible, individualized testing approach for all communication levels
  • Experience with co-occurring autism, medical conditions, and behavioral complexity
  • Documentation for NM developmental disability waiver eligibility
  • Recommendations for educational placement, Medicaid services, and community supports
  • Legal and guardianship documentation where applicable

ADHD Evaluation

ADHD is frequently evaluated alongside autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability. However, it’s one of the most commonly missed diagnoses — especially in women, girls, and adults who spent years compensating without knowing why. A comprehensive evaluation does more than confirm a diagnosis. It maps the individual’s full cognitive and behavioral profile and provides the documentation needed for school, college, and workplace accommodations.

  • Rating scales, clinical interview, cognitive testing, and behavioral observation
  • Differential diagnosis: rules out anxiety, learning disabilities, and other conditions
  • Adult ADHD evaluation available — self-referrals welcome
  • Documentation for school 504 plans, IEP eligibility, and college accommodation offices
  • Integrated findings when evaluated alongside ASD or ID

Learning Disorder Evaluation

Learning disorders — including dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia — reflect a different way the brain processes academic information. They have nothing to do with intelligence, effort, or motivation. Without an accurate diagnosis, children don’t have the accommodations they need to show what they truly know and can do. We evaluate academic achievement, cognitive processing, and related skills, and prepare families to advocate effectively at IEP and 504 meetings.

  • Comprehensive cognitive and academic achievement testing
  • Covers reading (dyslexia), writing (dysgraphia), and math (dyscalculia)
  • Processing measures: phonological skills, rapid naming, working memory, processing speed
  • Documentation for IEP eligibility, 504 plans, and extended time accommodations
  • Guidance on effective tutoring approaches and instructional strategies
  • Experience with co-occurring ADHD and autism

Communication Disorder Evaluation

Communication disorders encompass a range of differences in language, speech, and social communication — including language disorder, social (pragmatic) communication disorder, and speech sound disorder. Psychological evaluation is particularly valuable when communication differences may be related to autism or another neurodevelopmental condition, and when a clearer diagnostic picture is needed to guide school and therapeutic planning. We coordinate closely with speech-language pathologists.

  • Assessment of receptive and expressive language and pragmatic communication
  • Evaluation of social communication in the context of the full neurodevelopmental profile
  • Coordination with existing SLP evaluations and treatment teams
  • Documentation for school IEP teams and AAC referrals where appropriate
  • Clarifies diagnostic pictures when communication differences don’t fit a simple profile

Anxiety & Tic Disorder Evaluation

Anxiety disorders and tic disorders are significantly more common in autistic individuals and those with ADHD. They often look very different in neurodivergent people, making them harder to identify. Increased rigidity, meltdowns, and heightened sensory sensitivity can all be signs of underlying anxiety. We specialize in assessing these conditions in the full context of a neurodevelopmental profile and provide targeted treatment recommendations.

  • Anxiety assessment using validated measures and clinical interview
  • Tic disorder evaluation including Tourette Syndrome
  • Differential diagnosis: tics vs. stimming, anxiety vs. behavioral rigidity
  • Integrated findings with co-occurring ASD or ADHD diagnosis
  • Treatment recommendations: CBT, Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT)
  • School accommodation documentation

Behavioral Support Services

When behaviors create real safety risks or prevent participation in daily life — whether at home, at school, or in the community — they deserve skilled, compassionate, evidence-based support. Dr. Martins is a licensed Clinical Psychologist and Doctoral-Level BCBA (BCBA-D), one of the few clinicians in New Mexico with this combination of credentials. Our behavioral support services are grounded in Applied Behavior Analysis and a neurodiversity-affirming philosophy: every behavior is communication, and every intervention should build independence, not simply manage behavior.

  • Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) to identify what is driving the behavior
  • Individualized Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) development
  • Caregiver and school staff training in plan implementation
  • Data collection systems and ongoing monitoring
  • Coordination with school teams, residential providers, and other supports
  • Experience with self-injury, aggression, elopement, and severe noncompliance

School Consultation

Students with autism, intellectual disability, ADHD, and other neurodevelopmental differences spend most of their waking hours in school. Unfortunately, many schools struggle to access the specialized knowledge needed to support them effectively. Dr. Martins brings over 20 years of experience at the intersection of psychology, behavior analysis, and education. We consult directly with families and school teams to improve outcomes for students with complex profiles.

  • Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) in the school setting
  • Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) development for school implementation
  • Independent IEP review, goal development, and placement recommendations
  • Staff and paraprofessional training in autism and behavioral support strategies
  • Classroom observation and environmental modification guidance
  • Advocacy support for families navigating IEP meetings
